Reds begin in style with West Ham victory

Liverpool kicked off the 2018-19 Premier League season with a commanding 4-0 victory over West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring inside the 20-minute mark when he tapped in from Andy Robertson’s low cross from the left.

There was a similar feel about the second, too, as Sadio Mane converted from close range unmarked after James Milner had nudged the ball back into the six-yard box in first-half stoppage-time.

Mane also added the third shortly after the re-start, dispatching Roberto Firmino’s lay-off into the bottom corner on the spin.

Daniel Sturridge grabbed the fourth and final goal of the afternoon, a matter of seconds after coming on from the bench, when he slotted in at the back post from a corner to cap a fine first day of the new campaign for Liverpool.

  The team news

Alisson Becker and Naby Keita were handed their Premier League debuts, while fellow new arrivals Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri were named on the bench alongside Jordan Henderson.

  The first half…

An audible sense of optimism and belief hung in the air around Anfield as the game got under way, and Liverpool responded accordingly by asserting themselves from the off.

After a succession of half-chances and nearly moments, the Reds recorded their first notable attempt with 16 minutes gone. James Milner’s arching ball into path of Mane’s run was almost tucked away by the forward, but for the glove of Lukasz Fabianski.

The captain then swung in a tantalising centre from the right which narrowly evaded each of the front three by a mere couple of inches.

A breakthrough appeared inevitable – and it duly arrived with 19 minutes gone.

Keita spun into space and motored forward before releasing Robertson on the left of the area. His low cross picked out Salah at the back post, who gleefully tapped in to get his account up and running for the new season.

Liverpool were foiled a quick-fire second when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick was superbly beaten around the post by Fabianski before Georginio Wijnaldum scooped wide after pouncing on a loose ball.

West Ham mustered their first chance when Marko Arnautovic scampered into space and had an effort nicked wide by Joe Gomez before Fabian Balbuena planted a header from the resulting corner straight at Alisson.

At the other end, Fabianski again thwarted the Reds when he repelled Salah’s close-range attempt from Firmino’s pull back.

But, with the contest deep into stoppage-time, the home team did claim their second. Robertson hung a ball towards the back post where Milner did magnificently to keep play alive and divert it back across goal, enabling Mane to tap in from six yards out.

  The second half…

West Ham had an opportunity to reduce the deficit moments into the second period when Felipe Anderson’s near-post flick from a corner found the unmarked Michail Antonio, but he couldn’t adjust his body to convert.

Shortly after, Liverpool furthered their grip on the contest when Mane netted once more.

This time Firmino managed to nudge the ball into the path of the No.10, who spun and steered a low shot into the bottom corner.

As the contest entered its final quarter, Henderson was introduced from the bench in place of Firmino as the Reds threated a fourth.

Wijnaldum clipped over the bar and Salah went close to nudging in another Robertson delivery across the face of goal.

Shaqiri replaced Mane in the final stages to make his league bow before Sturridge came on for Salah.

And with his first touch, Sturridge steered in hosts’ fourth, meeting a corner at the back post and nudging in just seconds after coming from the bench.

Milner and Mane strike to beat Palace

Goals in stoppage time at the end of each half by James Milner and Sadio Mane earned Liverpool a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Milner opened the scoring with a penalty just before the break after Mohamed Salah was fouled while attempting to wriggle away from Mamadou Sakho.

And Mane wrapped the three points up in the 93rd minute, the No.10 racing onto Salah’s pass and rounding Wayne Hennessey after the Reds had absorbed a late flurry from Palace - who had seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent off with a quarter of an hour left for tripping the Egyptian as he bore down on goal.

The hosts went close to opening the scoring when Andros Townsend struck the crossbar with a long-range effort, and Alisson Becker was forced to tip Luka Milivojevic’s free-kick wide as they pressed for an equaliser before Wan-Bissaka’s dismissal.

Liverpool, though, displayed the majority of the attacking intent throughout the game and were good value for their second successive win at the start of the season amid a typically-boisterous atmosphere at Selhurst Park.

  Team news

Jьrgen Klopp opted to field an unchanged starting line-up from the opening-day win over West Ham United, with Joel Matip and Simon Mignolet returning to the matchday squad as substitutes.

  First half

It took just three minutes for Salah to get a first sight of Hennessey’s goal. The Egyptian was found by Naby Keita’s pass from deep, but the attentions of Sakho and Patrick van Aanholt meant he was unable to force the ‘keeper into a save.

Liverpool adopted a patient approach in the early stages, content to probe through circulating the ball as Palace sat deep.

The hosts were opened up midway through the half thanks to a piece of individual brilliance from Keita who, all in one movement, collected Alisson’s pass in the left-back area and turned nimbly away from Townsend.

He then fed Salah, only for the forward’s attempted lob over the onrushing Hennessey to clear the crossbar.

Palace, though, went even closer to opening the scoring soon after, when Townsend’s long-range curler cannoned back off the bar after Keita had ceded possession.

Keita and Andy Robertson were next to have attempts on goal - Hennessey saving from the former, before the latter sliced Salah’s hooked cross over.

Roy Hodgson’s team enjoyed their best spell of the half thereafter, but the Reds went in ahead as Milner coolly converted the resulting spot-kick after Salah had been felled by Sakho in the area.

  Second half

Liverpool’s advantage could have been doubled in the early stages of the second period, too.

Alisson began a dangerous counter that ended with Salah pulling the ball back to Keita, who dragged wide from 18 yards.

Milivojevic’s free-kick was palmed away by Alisson at the other end as the home fans cranked up the volume - and the Reds’ goalkeeper was on hand once again to gather Wilfried Zaha’s attempt after the Palace forward worked an opening for himself in the box.

That was to be the hosts’ final foray forward with 11 men on the pitch, however.

Salah produced a magnificent first touch on the halfway line to set himself free on goal from Roberto Firmino’s pass, but the No.11 was tripped by Wan-Bissaka as he bore down on Hennessey, leading to the youngster’s dismissal.

Liverpool immediately set about making their numerical advantage count on the scoreboard, with Keita and Salah being denied by Hennessey.

And they did so in injury time, when Salah fed Mane on the break and the Senegalese surged past Hennessey before slotting his third goal of the campaign into an empty net.

Firmino's injury-time winner settles PSG thriller

Roberto Firmino struck in stoppage time to snatch a 3-2 victory for Liverpool over Paris Saint-Germain in a pulsating Champions League encounter at Anfield.

The Reds led 2-0 after 35 minutes of their opening Group C fixture, which was played out amid an electric atmosphere in L4, thanks to Daniel Sturridge's header and a James Milner penalty.

Thomas Meunier pulled one back for PSG before the interval and, after Firmino - who started as a substitute after sustaining an eye injury in Saturday's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur - had come on, Kylian Mbappe levelled with just seven minutes left to play.

Jurgen Klopp's side refused to settle for a point, however, and Firmino's stunning, unerring, 92nd-minute finish saw them claim all three.

  Team news

Klopp made two changes to his starting line-up, with Sturridge and Jordan Henderson coming in for Firmino and Naby Keita.

  First half

Both sides started quickly as Anfield crackled with noise.

But, after Virgil van Dijk had swept up Neymar’s attempted throughball to Mbappe following a drifting dribble across the pitch from the Brazilian, the hosts asserted their authority for a 10-minute spell that saw Alphonse Areola’s goal come under considerable threat.

First, a well-worked corner routine ended with the PSG goalkeeper tipping Van Dijk’s shot wide from Milner’s drilled cross.

Liverpool’s vice-captain was next to test Areola as he fizzed in a low left-footed that was bound for the bottom corner from 20 yards and, in the 10th minute, the visiting stopper saved from Sadio Mane.

Joe Gomez then sent a header over the crossbar from Mohamed Salah’s corner, before PSG regained a foothold.

Neymar hit a stinging drive that Alisson Becker parried away, with Van Dijk on hand to snuff out any danger from the rebound as Edinson Cavani lurked with intent, and Liverpool’s ‘keeper comfortably gathered Angel Di Maria’s attempt from distance soon after.

The Reds, though, took the lead on the half-hour mark.

Andy Robertson produced a peach of a first-time delivery after Trent Alexander-Arnold had overhit a cross from the right, and Sturridge evaded Thiago Silva before burying his header beyond Areola from close range.

Mbappe cleared Alisson’s bar from Neymar’s pulled-back corner as PSG sought an immediate riposte.

However, as the decibel level increased, so did Liverpool’s advantage, courtesy of Milner’s penalty.

Juan Bernat tripped Georginio Wijnaldum in the area, allowing the No.7 to step up and plant a firm spot-kick into the bottom-right corner of the Kop-end net.

Meunier halved the French champions’ deficit before the break, smartly volleying in after Di Maria’s cross had hit Robertson, but the first half belonged to the home side.

  Second half

The early stages of the second period saw no drop off in quality or tempo, with Liverpool again carrying the greater attacking menace.

Klopp’s team thought they’d restored their two-goal cushion when Salah poked home in the 58th minute, only for referee Cuneyt Cakir to overrule his assistant and disallow after Sturridge had slid in on Areola.

Areola was then on hand to palm away Sturridge’s miscued header from Alexander-Arnold’s pinpoint delivery, before Klopp introduced Firmino in place of the Reds’ first goalscorer with a little under 20 minutes remaining.

Salah and Mane sent shots off target as Liverpool pressed for a third, but it was PSG who struck next when Mbappe finished coolly following a dart through the centre by Neymar.

With time running out, the match appeared to be heading for a draw.

  Firmino, though, had other ideas.

Liverpool kept the ball alive from a stoppage-time corner. Their No.9 dipped inside, then outside onto his right foot and arrowed a shot back across Areola to spark scenes of pandemonium inside Anfield.

Reds beat Torino to wrap up pre-season

Liverpool completed their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 win over Torino on Tuesday night as new quartet Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri all made their Anfield debuts for the Reds.

Back on home soil for the first time in almost three months, the hosts treated the fans to an entertaining match as goals from Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum and Daniel Sturridge ensured they head into Sunday's Premier League opener against West Ham United on a run of four victories.

Italian outfit Torino, who finished ninth in Serie A last season, arrived in L4 with a 100 per cent pre-season record and no goals conceded, but they should have been behind after just 16 minutes.

Sadio Mane was buffeted in the box by Il Toro centre-back Gleison Bremer and despite the No.10 commendably staying on his feet, referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot.

Fabinho - penalty-taker supreme during his days at AS Monaco - stepped up to take the spot-kick but dragged his effort low and wide of goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu's left post.

Four minutes later, Firmino gave the Reds the lead their early performance deserved.

Latching onto Mohamed Salah's clever through ball from the edge of the box, the Brazilian fired in a shot from 14 yards out that took a looping deflection off wing-back Lorenzo Di Silvestri and nestled in the back of the net.

Liverpool continued to swarm forward and on 23 minutes Wijnaldum doubled the lead. Racing through to meet Firmino's defence-splitting pass, the Dutch midfielder produced a calm, low finish to beat Sirigu from the right angle of the box.

The visitors rallied and got one back after Di Silvestri deftly controlled a high ball on the right flank and crossed for captain Andrea Belotti to head home from six yards out.

With half-time looming, Wijnaldum sprung the offside trap to collect another perfectly-timed pass from Salah but was denied his second goal of the game by a tremendous save from Sirigu.

Klopp made seven changes at the break as Shaqiri, Andy Robertson, Marko Grujic, Curtis Jones, Adam Lallana, Sturridge and Danny Ings entered the fray.

It took just five minutes for the latter to get his first sight of goal. Some fancy footwork and a neat pass from strike partner Sturridge set him up, but the Englishman fired his shot wide of the far post.

Sturridge brought another good save out of Sirigu just short of the hour mark when the No.15 bamboozled Torino centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou in the box and stung the hands of the goalkeeper with a snap-shot.

Then it was Ings' turn to test the Torino stopper, who once again denied the Reds, although this time he was indebted to his defence for clearing off the line after making only a partial save.

Despite the chances, Liverpool struggled to match the fluency of the first half but the Anfield crowd were in full voice on 70 minutes when Jordan Henderson came on for his first appearance since reaching the World Cup semi-finals with England.

And that cheer was matched when Loris Karius replaced Alisson between the posts for the final 15 minutes at Anfield.

With three minutes to go, Sturridge added the final flourish when he headed home from Shaqiri's wonderfully floated cross from the right to notch his sixth goal in pre-season.
