You'll
Never Walk Alone |
History
You'll Never Walk Alone |
When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a song written
by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for their 1945 musical, Carousel. It was sung
in the original show by Christine Johnson and later Jan Clayton with chorus. It is sung in
the movie by Claramae Turner (although the weeping Shirley Jones first tries to sing it,
but cannot), and later reprised by Ms. Jones and a chorus.
In the musical, the song is sung after the death of the lead, Billy Bigelow, to
give courage to Julie Jordan, pregnant with child at the time, and is reprised in the
final scene to encourage a graduation class of which Louise (their daughter) is a member.
As a result, it has become a standard, sung by graduation classes in the United States.
The song's popularity arose during the original Broadway production because of
World War II, where many members of the audience had husbands, brothers, boyfriends or
fiances at war overseas, which led to solace in the song's message.
The song was recorded by many artists, first charting in 1945 in a version by Frank
Sinatra (#9 on the Billboard charts). The great tenor Mario Lanza conducted by Constantine
Callinicos sang it in 1950. Patti LaBelle and the BlueBelles had a #34 charting version in
1964. Elvis Presley's version got to #90 in 1968. Famous Dutch artist Lee Towers also
recorded this song on his 1976 album "It's raining in my heart" as well as on
several other albums later in his career.
As inspirational sports anthem
In England, the song's most famous outing was recorded in the early 1960s by
Liverpool Merseybeat group Gerry & the Pacemakers, which reached #1 in the UK charts
on the 26 October 1963 where it stayed for 4 weeks. It quickly became the club anthem of
Liverpool Football Club [1] and is invariably sung by its supporters moments before the
start of the game. [2] The words You'll Never Walk Alone feature in the club crest. In
Scotland, the song was later adopted as the anthem of Glasgow football club Celtic.
The song is also sung by other association football crowds including:
England: Ipswich Town
Austria: SK Rapid Vienna.
Netherlands: FC Twente & Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Germany: FC St. Pauli (also Borussia Dortmund and Alemannia Aachen and FSV Mainz
05).
Greece: AEK Athens FC (AEK fans adopted a Greek version of the song).
Japan: F.C. Tokyo.
I taly: Hellas Verona F.C..
Belgium: many Belgian traditional clubs (like Club Brugge K.V., Antwerp FC or KV
Mechelen) have adopted the song. It has become tradition to hold scarves up high during
this song, and - in spite of fierce rivalries between most traditional songs - respect the
other team's singing of it.
The Pink Floyd song "Fearless", from their 1971 Meddle album, includes a
recording of the Liverpool Kop singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the end of
the track.
The song also reached #1 in the UK charts in June 1985 for 2 weeks, a charity
record, following the Valley Parade fire at Bradford City on 11 May 1985. The song was
performed by The Crowd (including Gerry Marsden, Paul McCartney and Rolf Harris).
Other performances and recordings
An operatic version by Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo & Luciano Pavarotti with
Zubin Mehta, reached number 21 in the UK charts in July 1998.
In 1999, it was performed by John Farnham, who made his first release of the song
in 1972, at the Tour Of Duty Concert in Dili, East Timor, for the Australian peace-keeping
troops.
On The Led Zeppelin DVD a version was performed by the crowd at the conclusion of
the 1979 Knebworth performance on the second disk of the set.
It is also played by the Western Illinois University Marching Leathernecks at the
end of every performance. The band faces each other in a large circle with a quartet in
the centre. The members play and sing "Never Walk" as reminder of the strength
of the bond between members. This tradition was started by the late Dale Hopper during the
1970s.
The song is traditionally sung by the Desert Vista marching band after every
performance, a tradition started by the late Eric Holden.
It is also the corps song of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps and is sung by
Jerry Lewis at the end of his annual telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

We
All Live in a Red and White Kop |
Poor
Scouser Tommy |
On a Saturday afternoon
We support a team called Liverpool
And we sing until we drop (and we sail up to the top)
On the famous Spion Kop (of our red and white Spion Kop)
We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
In a town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed the seas
And he told me of his pride
They were a famous football team
So we trailed to Anfield Road,
Singing songs of victory
And there we found the holy ground,
Of our hero Bill Shankly
We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
We all live in a red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
A red and white Kop
(Tune: "Yellow Submarine", by The Beatles) |
Let me tell you the story of a poor boy
Who was sent far away from his home
To fight for his king and his country
And also the old folks back home
So they put him in a Highland division
Sent him off to a far foreign land
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands
And there's nothing to see but the sands
In a battle that started next morning
Under the Lybian sun
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
With the blood gushing out of his head (of his head)
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
These were the last words he said...
Oh...I am a Liverpudlian
I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing, I like to shout
I go there quite a lot
We support the team that's dressed in red
A team that we all know
A team that we call Liverpool
And to glory we will go
We've won the League, we've won the Cup
We've been to Europe too
We played the Toffees for a laugh
And we left them feeling blue - Five Nil !
One two
One two three
One two three four
Five nil !
Rush scored one
Rush scored two
Rush scored three
And Rush scored four! |
A
Liverbird Upon my Chest |
The
Fields of Anfield Road |
Here's a song about a football team
The greatest team you've ever seen
A team that play total Football
They've won the league, Europe and all.
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
With Kenny Dalglish on the ball
He was the greatest of them all
And Ian Rush, four goals or two
Left Evertonians feeling blue
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
Now if you go down Goodison Way
Hard luck stories you hear each day
There's not a trophy to be seen
' Cos Liverpool have swept them clean
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
Now on the glorious 10th of May
There's laughing reds on Wembley Way
We're full of smiles and joy and glee
It's Everton 1 and Liverpool 3
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
Now on the 20th of May
We're laughing still on Wembley Way
Those Evertonians are feeling blue
It's Liverpool 3 and Everton 2
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
And as we sang round Goodison Park
With crying blues all in a nark
They're probably crying still
at Liverpool 5 and Everton nil.
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
We Remember them with pride
Those mighty reds of Shankly's side
And Kenny's boys of '88
There's never been a side so great
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
Now back in 1965
When great Bill Shankly was alive
We're playing Leeds, the score's 1-1
When it fell to the head of Ian St John
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May
On April 15th '89
What should have been a joyous time
Ninety six Friends, we all shall miss
And all the Kopites want justice (JUSTICE!)
A Liverbird upon my chest
We are the men, of Shankly's best
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the championship in May |
Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling :
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.
Chorus :
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road
Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away..
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road
(Tune: "The Fields of Athenry", by Dubliners) |
