The Reds progressed to the next
round of the Cup thanks to a performance far superior to the one given in the original
game at Anfield.
Larry Lloyd returned to the defence for the Reds and this helped to give the Reds a
more rigid look about them.
After just fifteen minutes the Reds took the lead. Heighway chested down a pass
from Waddle before firing right footed past Book in the Rovers goal.
The Reds continued to show the difference between the two sides and scored a second
on the hour, Peter Cormack rose to head home an Alec Lindsay free kick.
Rovers did have the ball in the net twenty minutes from time but Elwiss had been
flagged offside and the goal did not stand.
Overall the Reds deserved the win but they had been forced to play well in order to
beat a really gutsy Doncaster Rovers side.
