- Ray Clemence saved a penalty from John Brownlie |

Liverpool could consider
themselves lucky to escape from Easter Road with a one-goal defeat, Hibernian having
dominated most of the match. After two early flurries in which Heighway and Callaghan went
close for the Reds, the hosts gained control of midfield, and Harper's goal was well
deserved. It came when Neal failed to cut out a through-pass, Duncan wrong-footed the
defence with a first-time cross and the former Evertonian met it crisply from ten yards.
Liverpool managed a few attacking sorties, and a Neal 'goal' on 57 minutes was disallowed
for offside. But the balance of power remained with the Scots, who seemed about to be
rewarded when they won a penalty - Lawler having downed Duncan - ten minutes from time.
However, Clemence dived athletically to his right to repel Brownlie's kick, making the
Reds marginal favourites to reach the next round. |
