Graeme Souness hadn't been registered in time for this tie but the Reds still
managed to win. A night of pouring rain saw the Reds go behind after fourteen minutes but
the Reds didn't panic and scored twice in either half. Jimmy Case scored the first as his
free kick wasn't held in the wet conditions by the Benfica Keeper. Hughes scored the
second with a perfect lob over the stranded Bento.
Liverpool revealed all their ruthless efficiency and strength of character to
overturn a Benfica side that had not been beaten for 46 games. On a filthy night when
torrential rain turned the pitch into a swamp, the Reds showed the greater appetite for
the fray and their comeback from a goal down must rank as one of their most valiant
European achievements. The slick Portuguese went ahead when Nene sprinted on to a long
clearance, outstripped the chasing defenders and beat the advancing Clemence with a
precise shot. Liverpool refused to buckle, however, and equalised when Case netted with a
free-kick from the edge of the box. Benfica poured into attack as the second half
commenced, but Smith and company held firm and the Eagles became flustered. Then it was
Liverpool's turn to advance, and Hughes secured a precious lead with a speculative floater
from the left flank. |
