  - Mini Tournament

Liverpool's eagerly-awaited dual with the reigning European champions was something of a disappointment.

The West Germans, less than a week away from the start of their new season, seemed unwilling and unable to open up their game to trouble the Reds.

Joe Fagan wasn't having the best of luck with injuries. When Ian Rush was forced to pull out of the game withaworrying recurrence of an old groin injury, Gary Gillespie stepped in for his debut.

But the Ј325,000 signing from Coventry City was to last only 18 minutes before a thigh strain had him limping to the touch-line and out of the rest of the tour.

A penalty shoot-out was employed to decide who would meet Standard Liege in the final of the tournament, and Liverpool didn't exactly excel.

Although Phil Neal, Steve Nicol and Graeme Souness survived the ordeal, nothing could spare the blushes of Kenny Dalglish, whose weak shot was saved, or Alan Kennedy, who missed completely.

Kaltz, Wuttke, Hansen and Magath scored for Hamburg-Schatzschneider, their expensive replacement for Horst Hrubesch, didn't.
