    Liverpool escape upset

Steve Senior held up his hands and allowed Liverpool to escape one of the greatest upsets in this year's FA Cup competition.

As York's talented young full-back challenged Johnston his hand made contact with the ball and referee Howard Taylor dramatically awarded Liverpool a penalty.

"I couldn't believe it," moaned Senior later. "I didn't know anything about it."

His goalkeeping colleague Leaning didn't know anything about Molby's spot kick, either, and so history was repeated.

Last season York, one of the greatest fighters in Cup history, also held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw. But they must hope there's no historical repeat in Tuesday's replay. For Liverpool won that 7-0 last season and gallant York wouldn't deserve that humiliation again.

Liverpool were obviously wary of the dangerous and slippery pitch that had been heavily sanded. And if their players found difficulty in keeping their feet they almost went behind in York's first attack in the opening minutes.

Cockney Kid Banton, at 50,000 pounds York's most expensive signing, looked suspiciously offside as he ran clear. But with only Grobbelaar to beat he knocked the ball wide.

On a pitch that was never good enough for safe football on which to play York's enthusiasm almost carried the day.

Still Liverpool lived dangerously. Loose marking gave MacPhail the chance to volley in a shot that was good enough to win any tie. But Grobbelaar flung himself to his left to pull off a sensational save.

Dalglish, making only his second full appearance in his side since New Year's Day, tried to bring some cohesion to their play, but Liverpool were startled by the bravery of York's challenge.

On a day made for defenders, Molby was outstanding and Liverpool owed so much to their devastating Dane. He protected Grobbelaar with some timely tackles, but even he couldn't stop York from taking the lead.

Walwyn shielded the ball cleverly against the combined challenge of Molby and Hansen and then laid it into the path of Ford. And York's longest serving player smashed the ball home just inside a post for a Rolls-Royce of a goal.

But York's dreams of glory lasted only four minutes before Senior made his damaging mistake. Referee Taylor had earlier ignored Liverpool's claims for a penalty when Rush was dragged down by Leaning.

But this time he had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Molby earned them a replay.
