LIVERPOOL will play the away leg of their Littlewoods Cup second round tie against
Wigan at Anfleld because Springfield Park has been deemed unsuitable for the match.
The capacity was slashed for safety reasons, effectively forcing a change in venue.
Going to Anfield was felt to be the most sensible option.
The Reds hold a 5-2 advantage from the first leg, where Wigan acquitted themselves
well and led 2-1 with 26 minutes to go. Two goals in the last ten minutes gave the
scoreline a harsh reflection from the Division Three side's point of view.
They still did better than Crystal Palace who were thrashed 9-0 earlier in the
month.
John Barnes will be absent because of injury and the versatile Steve Nicol is
expected to move to the left to fill the gap.
Wigan manager Bryan Hamilton admitted before the first leg that playing at Anfield
twice was a "daunting prospect" but his players should be confident after their
first leg showing. |
