  Notes:

  - Liverpool’s away game was played at Anfield because Springfield Park was not playable.

  - Steve Staunton is the only Liverpool player to score a hat trick after coming on as a sub.

  - Mascot: Andrew Cole (Birkenhead 12 aged), Liam Cunningham (Ellesmere Port 10 aged),

STEVE Staunton scored one of the more unlikely hat-tricks in Liverpool's history, replacing Ian Rush for the second half and proving to be a useful stand-in striker as Wigan were overwhelmed 8-2 on aggregate.

The match ended with a strike partnership of Staunton and Jan Molby as Liverpool achieved a 3-0 victory in the 'away' leg of this Littlewoods Cup second round tie.

Staunton's first was created by his rival for the left-back spot, David Burrows. The latter's cross was touched in by the 20-year-old Irishman.

He rifled the second in the 72nd minute and completed his treble three minutes later following good work by Ray Houghton and Steve McMahon.
Wigan kept battling to the end but the gap in class was vast.
