OWEN AND KEWELL SECURE DERBY GLORY FOR REDS

A Michael Owen double and Harry Kewell's first goal for the Reds gave Liverpool a fantastic 3-0 win over city rivals Everton this afternoon.

Owen netted a goal in each half and Kewell volleyed home his first for the Reds late on to secure local bragging rights for the red half of the city for a few months at least.

The goal drought is over. The winless streak is over. The smiles are well and truly back at Anfield and Gerard Houllier can enjoy the next two weeks before the Blackburn game happy that the players he has so loyally stood by during the difficult opening weeks of the campaign have repaid his faith.

Liverpool were excellent. Once the frenetic opening derby minutes had passed by, it was the Reds who settled the game down and displayed a brand and style of football that Kopites everywhere will be hoping becomes the norm from now on.

They passed the ball well, they used the whole width of the field in their attacking play and at times Everton simply couldn't cope with the quality of football up against them from a team supposedly in crisis.

The Blues created chances and may well feel as though they deserved at least a share of the spoils, but Liverpool always looked the better of the two sides and richly merited their first three point return of the campaign.

Igor Biscan was a rock at the back while El Hadji Diouf and Harry Kewell also turned in their best Liverpool performances to date to help secure the Reds' third successive Goodison victory.

Chances were few and far between in the opening stages, Everton's best falling to Tomas Radzinski who was denied a goal by a sensational Igor Biscan tackle and Liverpool's clearest opening coming when Harry Kewell fired over when well placed in the area.

Liverpool took the lead seven minutes before the break when Michael Owen netted his first of the season from open play and scored for the third consecutive match at Goodison.

Harry Kewell fed Owen with a glorious pass and Owen made no mistakeat the Gwladys Street end with a low left footed finish across Steve Simonsen and into the far corner.

Everton almost snatched an immediate leveller when Wayne Rooney was given a sight of goal inside the area, but his snap shot from close range was stopped on its way to the back of the net by Jerzy Dudek.

Gerard Houllier's side clearly sensed this game was there for the taking and almost doubled their lead before the break when Michael Owen's goalbound effort was turned away by Simonsen.

Everton made a change at the break, replacing David Unsworth with Thomas Gravesen and they were almost on level terms within a minute of the re-start.

Mark Pembridge's curling free-kick was only half dealt with by Dudek and Radzinski somehow missed the opportunity to turn the ball home from on the goal-line.

Liverpool showed they weren't content to sit on their lead and almost netted a second when Smicer burst onto a loose ball in the midfield and stung the fingertips of Simonsen with a rasping right footed drive.

The second goal did arrive shortly after and again from the boots of Michael Owen. Milan Baros created the chance with a powerful run down the right, and when he laid the ball perfectly into Owen's path the Liverpool striker made no mistake with a deadly right footed finish.

Everton carved out a great chance to give themselves a lifeline in the game after an hour when Wayne Rooney ran clear on goal but drove his shot wide of the far post.

Owen almost completed a magical hat-trick shortly after when he was presented with the ball by Smicer on the edge of the area, but his curling drive was palmed away by Simonsen before it nestled in the top corner.

Everton substitute Duncan Ferguson came within inches of grabbing a goal 14 minutes from time when his free kick from outside the area hit the underside of thee cross bar and bounced away to safety for the Reds.

Liverpool secured the victory and killed off Everton's challenge withtheir third goaleleven minutes from time. Michael Owen skipped around the advancing Simonsen and crossed to the far post where Kewell arrived to drive home a left footed volley into the back of the net.

"3-0 in your Cup final" sang the Liverpool fans to the disappointed Evertonians in the closing minutes of the match. Let's hope this is the first of many joyful afternoons for Reds' fans over the remainder of the season.
