KEWELL CRACKER AS REDS
WIN
Liverpool have made it 12 unbeaten in the Premiership after a superb second half
goal from Harry Kewell gave them a hard fought 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield
today.
The win means Liverpool stay in 3rd place in the Premiership, but they are now just
one point behind 2nd placed Manchester United after their derby defeat today and the Reds
have played two games less.
It had looked like we would have to settle for a point against a good Spurs side
that showed why they are doing so well this season, but Kewell won the day with a
brilliant volley after 58 minutes had been played. It was Kewell's first of the season and
what a goal it was.
It was back to League action today for the Reds after their extraordinary exploits
in the FA Cup last week and Rafa Benitez recalled Pepe Reina and Fernando Morientes to his
side as they looked to make it 12 unbeaten and put some distance between themselves and
Spurs, hot on their heels in 4th.
Tottenham came to Anfield in good form themselves despite their FA Cup exit at
Leicester last Sunday. And with a record of not being beaten in their last six meetings
with Liverpool, we knew to expect a tough game.
Having said that, we did have a slow start to this game, but Liverpool were almost
in front as early as the 8th minute and perhaps they should have been. Gerrard suddenly .
Bursting to life to win a free kick and then crossing to Crouch at the far post,
who headed point blank at Robinson.
Liverpool were gradually warming to their challenge and they created another great
chance just moments later when another Gerrard cross gave Morientes a chance, but he
couldn't make proper contact on the stretch and Robinson saved easily this time.
Spurs responded when Dawson headed over onto the Kop, but it was Liverpool who
would continue to dominate and they will have counted themselves unlucky not to have got
in front in a first half when they were clearly the better side.
Their last good chance of the first half would fall to Morientes and he did
everything but score as his looping header from Finnan's cross cannoned back off the bar
with Robinson looking worried.
Liverpool started the second half attacking the Kop End, but it was Spurs who
started in the ascendancy and they almost took the lead straight away through Keane. It
came when Jenas got free of Riise on the right and when his cross found Keane we thought
he'd score, but he made a mess of the finish and the Reds survived.
Tottenham had their tails up, but Liverpool came straight back at them and Crouch
brought the best out of England goalkeeper Robinson with a header from Gerrard's right
wing corner.
The game was tightly balanced and everything you would expect from two sides that
sit proudly in the top four of English football. But just when you thought they would
cancel each other out, Liverpool broke the deadlock with a brilliant goal from Harry
Kewell after 58 minutes.
It came when Finnan swung a searching cross into the area and when it reached
Kewell his technique was flawless as he smashed a magnificent volley past Robinson to make
it 1-0.
Spurs responded instantly with Mido bringing the best out of Reina, but Liverpool
continued to look dangerous and Gerrard warmed the hands of Robinson with a well hit
drive.
Tottenham boss Martin Jol decided it was time to make changes and he brought Defoe
on for Tainio. Rafa Benitez responded by bringing Cisse on for Crouch and from Cisse's
first contribution Liverpool almost made it 2-0 when Riise's volley was deflected wide
after Ciise's persistence had won a corner.
As you'd expect, Tottenham continued to press for an equalizer, but Liverpool and
the impressive Sami Hyypia would not breached. And Tottenham's cause was not helped by the
87th minute sending off of Stalteri when he stopped Kewell as he ran clear.
Make no mistake this was a big win for Liverpool. They now haven't lost in 12 games
and they could soon be Chelsea's nearest challengers.
