REDS
DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Liverpool's unbeaten start to the season has come to an end after goals from Frank
Lampard, Damien Duff, Joe Cole and Geremi gave Chelsea a flattering 4-1 win at Anfield in
the Premiership today.
The Reds have proved a point in consecutive meeting's with Jose Mourinho's men, but
they haven't won any points today despite producing another good performance.
The first half of this match had everything. It was Chelsea who would go in at the
break in front, but Liverpool, as on Wednesday night, did enough to suggest that any gap
between themselves and the Premiership Champions was slight.
In fact they did something in the opening 45 minutes today that they had
failed to do in the last match and that was to breach Chelsea's resistance when Steven
Gerrard scored in the 37th minute.
That Gerrard's goal was cancelled out by two from Chelsea was probably a little
unfair on the Reds, but they paid the price for allowing Chelsea's ruthless attack too
close when first Lampard and then Duff struck.
Liverpool had enjoyed the better of this game before Traore's mis-timed tackle on
Drogba in the 26th minute gave Frank Lampard the opportunity to give his side the lead
from the penalty spot.
But Liverpool would not be moved from their belief and they were deservedly level
just 9 minutes later when Riise's cross found it's way to Gerrard and he finished
superbly. There'll be no dispute over that goal.
It was a goal that Liverpool didn't just deserve, but it also seemed to galvanise
their belief and they began to press Chelsea back again.
When Damien Duff restored Chelsea's lead in the 43rd minute, the Reds would rightly
feel a little unlucky, but they had done enough already to suggest the game was far from
over.
It might have been over almost as soon as the second half kicked off though had
Drogba been more composed when Hyypia's headed clearance left him clear.
After that the game continued it's usual theme, Liverpool pushing and Chelsea
resisting.
Steven Gerrard more than most empitomised their spirit and it was from his 60th
minute corner that theReds werealmost level. Crouch only denied by the outstretched hand
ofCech to deflect the ball away from his head.
But Liverpool's task would become almost impossible when in the 63rd minute Joe
Cole scored Chelsea's 3rd after Reina's save from Drogba rolled into his path.
No other team has scored two, let alone three goals against Chelsea this season but
Liverpool were not about to lie down and Riise and Crouch both fired shots in an attempt
to force a way back.
It wasn't to be though and we had to endure a Chelsea 4th when Geremi took
advantage of our lack of defenders to sweep the ball into the net.
We now had a scoreline that was no reflection on the match, but more a product of
Liverpool having to chase the game and substitute defenders for attackers.
Liverpool may have lost today, but they have no reason to be too down.
Even Chelsea themselves should endorse that.
