REDS GO SECOND AFTER DERBY DELIGHT
Liverpool have gone 2nd in the Premiership after an own goal from Phil Neville and
superb strikes from Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell gave them a 3-1 victory over Everton
today in a game that saw Steven Gerrard sent off and both teams finish with 10 men.
The Liverpool skipper was given his marching orders in the 18th minute after
earning a second yellow card for a foul on Kilbane. But the ten men responded brilliantly
to win after Neville's OG and strikes from Garcia and Kewell proved enough despite Tim
Cahill's 61st minute goal for Everton.
And in a game that saw eleven bookings, Everton substitute Andy Van Der Meyde joined
Gerrard for an early bath when he was sent off in the 73rd minute for a leading with an
elbow in a challenge with Alonso.
It was Everton who would settle into the game quickest and they created two good
opportunities for Tim Cahill inside the first 10 minutes. Cahill will think he should have
done better with his first chance in particular after a series of deflections left him one
on one with Reina, but he scuffed his shot and Reina saved easily.
The Reds responded with Luis Garcia shot wide, but their chances of winning took a
massive blow in the 18th minute when Steven Gerrard was sent off.
We'd already seen that referee Phil Dowd was in no mood for any nonsense when
Cahill was booked for a foul on Sissoko. But when Gerrard was booked for kicking the ball
away in the 17th minute, no one could have expected the flash of red that followed.

From Everton's free kick the ball worked it's way to Kevin Kilbane and as he
mis-controlled, Gerrard mis-timed his tackle, giving Dowd little option but to send the
Reds' skipper from the field.
Liverpool were now well up against it, but they responded in the only way you would
expect and; driven on by the Kop, they slowly began to gain a foothold into the game.
Rafa Benitez was probably hoping his side could reach half time level so that he
could re-organise his 10 men, so he must have been absolutely delighted to take a 1-0 lead
into the break when Phil Neville headed Xabi Alonso's 45th minute corner into his own net.
And if Neville's intervention had ensured a happy half time for those wearing Red,
Luis Garcia's goal in only the second minute of the 2nd half to make it 2-0 almost took
the roof off Anfield.
There had seemed little danger for Everton as the Reds worked the ball down the
right flank, but Peter Crouch's flick on opened the door for Garcia and he finished
superbly into the Kop net with a lob that had Richard Wright grasping at thin air.
Everton found a way back into the game in the 61st minute when Cahill headed home
from Osman's corner, but Liverpool would rightly bemoan their luck after television
replays confirmed that Stubbs had handled the ball in the build up to the corner.
Although that's not to say that the Reds would begin to feel sorry for themselves
because they again responded in superb fashion. Everton boss David Moyes had looked to
build on Cahill's strike when making a double substitution, but it was the 10 men of
Liverpool who would continue creating the better chances and Harry Kewell forced Wright
into a brilliant save in the 69th minute. And that came just moments after Xabi Alonso had
struck the Everton crossbar with a free kick.
And Everton's job would become even harder in the 73rd minute when Andy Van Der
Meyde was given a straight red card for catching Alonso in the face when jumping for the
ball.
Liverpool made sure of the win when Harry Kewell scored a brilliant left footed
shot from 20 yards in the 84th minute. And it will be the red half of Merseyside
celebrating tonight after completing a superb double over their blue rivals.
