RESERVES FALL TO HEAVY DEFEAT
Liverpool Reserves suffered a disappointing evening as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat at the
hands of Aston Villa at Walsall's Bescot Stadium.
Villa scored three goals in the first half and it was a frustrating night for
Liverpool who struggled defensively.
England youth international goalkeeper David Martin returned between the posts for
Liverpool after Jerzy Dudek was given a run-out in the last match at Blackburn. Martin had
kept eight clean sheets in 11 previous reserve team games this season, but he had one of
those nights to forget against Villa that every keeper has now and again.
The two teams recently drew 1-1 at Wrexham in a fiery encounter that saw Villa end
the game with nine men after two players were sent-off. Liverpool also had Lee Peltier
sent-off during the game for retaliation.
Liverpool fielded FA Youth Cup winning heroes Jack Hobbs, Godwin Antwi, Paul
Anderson and Miki Roque in their starting line-up while Academy youngsters Craig Lindfield
and Robbie Threlfall were named on the bench.
This was the start of a gruelling end to the season for Paco Herrera and Hughie
McAuley's team. The reserves play two home games at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground against
West Bromwich Albion on Thursday and Manchester United on Sunday, finishing the season
away at Manchester City next Tuesday.
Villa's reserve team coach is Kevin MacDonald who was part of the Liverpool team
that won the double in the 1985-86 season. The Scot will be back at Anfield on Bank
Holiday Monday playing for the Reds in the Replay 86 game against Everton, raising money
for the Marina Dalglish Oncology cancer Unit in the centre of excellence at the University
Hospital in Aintree.
Last season Villa Reserves beat Liverpool 4-0 at Villa Park and 6-1 at Wrexham and
they have certainly had the edge over the Reds second string in recent years.
Villa were rampant in the first half and made the best possible start to the game
with a goal in the opening five minutes when striker Sam Williams climbed highest above
Martin to head the ball into the net.
Williams made it 2-0 after 13 minutes after a mistake from Martin. The Reds keeper
dropped the ball and Williams was on the spot to score.
Villa made it 3-0 after 33 minutes after a quite superb move. Shane Paul caused all
sorts of problems down the left wing and after turning Antwi inside out he cut the ball
back to Christian Kabeya who fired past Martin into the net.
Liverpool had to wait until the 39th minute for their first major effort on goal
and it came after some fine approach play from Danny Guthrie. The Reds midfielder beat a
couple of defenders and was only denied by a fine save from Villa keeper Robert Olejnik.
Then from the follow up effort Ramon Calliste saw his effort charged down by Shane Lowry.
Liverpool made a change at half-time when Scotland Under-21 international winger
Robbie Foy replaced Antonio Barragan. Then on the hour mark one of the youth cup heroes
Robbie Threlfall came on for his reserve team debut at left back. Lee Peltier ended the
game as captain of the reserves for the first time when Hobbs was replaced by 17-year-old
Austrian Besian Idrizaj.
Liverpool were a lot more solid in the second half and tightened up considerably at
the back, but the mistakes in the first half cost them dear.
Aston Villa Reserves: Olejnik, Bridges, Green, Lowry, O'Halloran, Hogg, Paul, Lund
(Stieber 68), Williams, Herd (McGurk 75), Kabeya.
Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Barragan (Foy 45), Smith,
Antwi, O'Donnell, Hobbs (Idrizaj 62), Anderson, Peltier, Calliste, Guthrie, Roque
(Threlfall 59). Subs not used: Lancaster (GK), Lindfield.
Referee: Mr Scarr.
Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: James Smith. Solid
display as usual at left back and the same when he moved to right back in the second half.
The Mr consistency of the reserve team.
Liverpool Reserve team coach Hughie McAuley admitted he was very disappointed with
his side's display in their 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
"We made three poor errors on our part and at any level you can't expect to
make those kind of mistakes and take anything from the game," a disappointed McAuley
told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"We were very disappointing in the first half and we just didn't defend well
and paid the price for it.
"We were better in the second half but by then the damage had been done."
