REDS CRASH TO SENIOR CUP DEFEAT

A late penalty from Peter Cumiskey condemned Liverpool Reserves to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Marine in the Senior Cup final at College Road.

The veteran forward stepped up and coolly sent Peter Gulacsi the wrong way on 84 minutes after Ronald Huth was adjudged to have handled in the area.

It summed up a disappointing night for Gary Ablett's side who looked fatigued throughout the contest, with a hungry Marine running out worthy winners.

It means the Reds will now turn their attention to the National reserve final against Aston Villa at Anfield on May 7 after missing out on a chance to add the Senior Cup to the Barclays Premier Reserve League North trophy and the Dallas Cup.

In truth, the NPL Premier Division side deserved their success, but it could have been so different had the visitors made the most of a series of opportunities in a lively start to the match.

Twice within the opening four minutes Krisztian Nemeth found space in and around the Marine penalty area but unfortunately for Ablett's men the Hungarian dragged his first effort just wide of the far post before seeing his next attempt brilliantly blocked by a last-ditch challenge after a mistake by home defender Phil Brazier.

The hosts responded in kind by manufacturing two chances of their own with Cumiskey firing a far post volley into the side netting and Paul Woolcott drilling a low effort inches past the far post after dispossessing Mikel San Jose.

It was a pattern of play that continued throughout a surprisingly open first 10 minutes and after Jordy Brouwer had forced a great save out of Andy Ralph with a low effort from the edge of the box and San Jose had seen his volley from 12 yards sail well over the bar, few spectators packed inside the Arriva Stadium would have anticipated that the game would transform into a somewhat forgettable affair.

But that was exactly what happened, with the home side's more physical approach to the game preventing the Reds from playing the type of flowing football that had seen them embark upon a 13 match winning streak prior to the clash.

Ablett's men seemed to be missing the effervescent qualities of the adventurous Emiliano Insua and the calming influence of Damien Plessis and Marine began to look the more likely of the two sides to break the deadlock.

As the first-half to came a close they should have opened the scoring but Cumiskey was left ruing a gilt-edged chance when he missed a header following a neat move down the right.

If anyone looked capable of producing the moment of magic Liverpool needed to kick-start their hopes, it was Nemeth.

But it wasn't to be his day, a fact summed up after a glorious weaving run took him past three defenders only for the youngster to see his low strike well saved by Ralph.

At the other end the Reds defence looked increasingly more vulnerable to the long ball over the top and Shaun Tuck should have put the home side ahead on 62 minutes but he turned down the opportunity to fire in a first time shot from the edge of the area and allowed San Jose to get across and make the challenge.

Marine could sense the away side were tiring and continued to push forward with Woolcott and Cumiskey both flashing volleys just wide before they finally got the reward for their endeavours six minutes from time.

Another searching ball in behind the Reds' defence caused more problems and when Tuck attempted to cut in from the right, the ball struck Ronald Huth's hand, with the referee having no alternative but to point to the spot.

Cumiskey stepped up and held his nerve to send the home crowd wild, and although Gerardo Bruna almost saved Liverpool's blushes with a stunning free-kick that flew inches over the crossbar in stoppage time, they could not draw level and slumped to their first defeat of 2008.

Marine: Ralph, Potter, McDermott, Farley, Brazier, Hussey, Woolcott, Parle, Tuck, Cumiskey (Arnold 90), Latham. Unused subs: Newell, Williams, Hussin, Banks.

Liverpool Reserves: Gulacsi, Kelly, Darby, San Jose, Huth, Ayala (Irwin 70), Flynn, Spearing, Brouwer (Lindfield 74), Nemeth, Bruna. Unused subs: Pacheco, Bouzanis, Simon.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Mikel San Jose. A composed performance from the Spaniard who coped admirably against Marine's experienced attack.
