  PROFILE

Gary Ablett was equally comfortable playing at left back or centre half and won his fair share of medals at Anfield.

Ablett was given his chance by Kenny Dalglish and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Charlton in December 1986, when he replaced the injured Alan Hansen. On his second appearance, and Anfield debut, he scored a magnificent goal in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in April 1987, and followed it up with another fine display in a 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield.

In the glorious title winning season of 1987-88 Ablett played the second part of the season at left back and did well, ably assisted by John Barnes, while the following season he only missed three games, covering for the injured Gary Gillespie and Hansen at centre half. In 1989 he won an FA Cup winners medal against Everton.

Although he had the occasional lapse in concentration, Ablett continued to impress when called upon and he was a firm favourite under Dalglish's reign as manager.

It was during the managerial reign of Graeme Souness that Ablett lost his place to Nicky Tanner and was sold across Stanley Park to Everton for 750,000 pounds in January 1992 to link up with former Red hero Peter Beardsley.

Transferred from Everton to Birmingham City on 21/6/1996 for 390,000 poundsr

  STAFF PROFILE

Gary Ablett made a sentimental return to Liverpool in July 2006 when he took over as the club's reserve team manager.

Ablett succeeded Paco Herrera who returned to Spain, and will be assisted by reserve team coach Hughie McAuley in the 2006/2007 season.

Speaking about his return to Melwood Ablett told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I'd heard of the unfortunate circumstances as to why Gary McAllister had turned the job down and I knew the manager was looking for someone with a background and who had played at this club and knew what the club meant. I just thought there was no harm in applying so I sent my CV in and a couple of days later Rafa called me and said 'would you like to come in?'

"I'm under no illusions. I know from the conversations I had with the manager there was some illustrious names who had applied for the job."
