  PROFILE

The sight of Harold Barton speeding down the touch-line in the early 1930s made him a favourite with the Kop. He joined Liverpool in 1929 and made his debut, on the right wing, against Blackburn Rovers in October that year. Barton possessed great skill and pace and gave defenders a difficult time with his tricky ball-play. He played 11 League games in that debut season, some of them on the left wing, although he always favoured the right flank. Barton was really a provider for Hodgson and Smith, but he scored his fair share of goals including all four in the FA Cup match against Chesterfield in January 1932 when he turned out as a makeshift centre-forward. They were not his most famous goals, however. They came on 11 February 1933 when his hat-trick from the wing helped Liverpool to a 7-4 victory over Everton. In 1933-4, however, Barton failed to command a regular place and he left at the end of the season, having made exactly 100 League appearances for the Reds.
