PROFILE
Has the distinction of being Bob Paisley's last signing as
Liverpool manager, costing 20,000 pounds as a 19-year-old from Shamrock Rovers in May
1983. His talents at left back combined committed tackling ability with adroit passing.
New manager Joe Fagan gave Beglin several stints as an unused substitute in domestic and
European games before calling him up for his senior debut in the First Division clash with
Southampton in November 1984.
But it was the following season of 1985-86, Kenny Dalglish's first as player boss,
in which Beglin established himself. He displaced Alan Kennedy in the No 3 shirt in the
September and made 53 appearances in a demanding campaign that saw Liverpool land the
League and FA Cup double and reach the Milk Cup semi-final.
But the Anfield career of the Waterford-born defender, who won 15 Republic of
Ireland caps, was cruelly ended when he broke his left leg in a tussle with Everton's Gary
Stevens in a Littlewoods Cup tie at Goodison in January 1987.
A reserve team comeback ended in cartilage surgery and he joined Leeds in 1989,
helping them win promotion from the old Second Division. Beglin hung up his boots in 1991
at the age of 27 and became a radio and TV football pundit.
