PROFILE
Stig Bjornebye's Anfield debut ended in a 5-1 defeat by Coventry City but
thankfully things were to get better during his Liverpool career. It was a difficult start
for the young left back, signed in 1992, and he only made occasional appearances during
his opening months on Merseyside. In fact, at the end of season 1993-94 he was even loaned
back to his former club Rosenborg.
Bjornebye finally displaced Julian Dicks in the team at the beginning of season
1994-95 and soon made the position his own. He played in the club's 1995 Coca-Cola Cup
success at Wembley but joy soon turned to despair as he broke a leg a few days later in a
match with Southampton at Anfield. The injury sidelined him for several months and he
managed just two appearances throughout the following season as Jason McAteer and Rob
Jones were the regular full backs.
Bjornebye's fortunes soon changed and he even managed to score the first goal of
the Premiership on the opening day of the 1996-97 season when he netted after five minutes
at Middlesbrough.
At international level he subsequently announced his retirement leaving behind many
happy memories including being involved in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and also playing a
major role in Norway's improved standing in world football.
Bjornebye has proved on a couple of occasions in his Anfield career that he is
capable of breaking back into the first team after spending time frustrated on the
sidelines. The start of the 1999/2000 season saws him battling with Dominic Matteo and
Steve Staunton for the left back berth at Anfield and once more struggling to break into
the first team, though he captained the reserves with distinction before becoming injured.
In March 2000 Stig joined Danish side Brondby on loan and then in the summer of
2000 he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers. Total LFC club games/goals for Reserves
