PROFILE Left
back David Burrows arrived at Anfield in a 500,000 pounds deal from West Bromwich Albion
in October 1988. He made his debut at Anfield in the 1-1 draw with Millwall and almost
scored with a fierce shot that just shaved the bar.
An all-action player, Burrows formed a good partnership down the left with John
Barnes. A fierce tackler, 'Bugsy' got his fair share of bookings and gave away the
occasional penalty with a rash challenge but he was popular at Liverpool.
Burrows always gave 100 per cent and was always committed for the Reds cause. He
was disappointed to miss out on a place in the team for the 1989 FA Cup Final with Everton
at Wembley, which went to Steve Staunton.
However, Burrows bounced back the following season to play his part in helping
Liverpool win the league title. He scored his first goal in the 3-1 Merseyside derby win
over Everton in September 1991, with a fierce angled drive past Neville Southall in front
of the Kop.
Under Graeme Souness, Burrows days at Anfield were numbered and just after the
start of the 1993-94 season he was sold, alongside Mike Marsh, to West Ham United in a
swap deal for Julian Dicks. Most Liverpool fans were sorry to see him leave Anfield.
Burrows wasn't away from Merseyside for long however, and returned for a short
spell with Everton before he was on his travels again to Coventry City. He is currently at
Birmingham City, but suffered another disappointment in a cup final when he was left out
of the 16 to play Liverpool in the Worthington Cup Final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Tenacious full back David Burows was signed by Kenny Dalglish for 500,000 pounds
from West Bromwhich Albion in October 1998. An England u21 international, he was one of
the most promising youngsters in the country and Liverpool had to beat off several other
top sides to secure his signature.
The Dudley born youngster was thrown in at the deep end due to an injury crisis,
and responded magnificently with a string of good performances at left back and on the
left side of midfield.
His tough tackling style and total commitment made him a hit with the fans, but
also meant he was no stranger to the referee's notebook. He was a highly competitive
player, but could also be more than a tad reckless with his challenges, although there was
never any malice in his game.
'Bugsy' had an excellent left foot and a fine engine, and was a very good servant
to the club in the five years he was there. His scrunched up face and permanent grimace
was a feature of the Liverpool side for much of the late 80's/early 90's, as he vied with
fellow youngster Steve Staunton for the left back berth.
Like Staunton, Burrows was also versatile. Dalglish occasionally used him as a
midfield marker, and he also played as an emergency centre half where he performed
admirably.
Burrows even played in goal during a European game in Moscow. Bruce Grobbelaar was
sent off for a professional foul, and Burrows took over the gloves. He even came close to
making himself an instant hero by coming agonisingly close to saving a penalty, as the
reds' crashed to a 4-2 defeat.
When Dalglish quit, the writing was on the wall for the likeable midlander, as
Kenny's successor Graeme Souness never really fancied him. David was eventually shipped
off to West Ham along with Mike Marsh and a wedge of cash in the deal which brought Julian
Dicks to Anfield.
At Liverpool Burrows looked a very good player. Maybe not top class but he
certainly didn't look out of place. After leaving, he looked distinctly ordinary, bouncing
around from one mediocre club to another, but he's still one of the better left backs the
club has had in the last twenty years or so.
