  PROFILE

Don was a local player born in Bootle who signed for the club in November 1950 when he was 18 years old after graduating through the Junior ranks. A Youth international defender, he didn't get his chance of first-team action until the 1953-54 relegation season, one of an astonishing thirty-one players called on by manager Don Welsh during that traumatic year. He made just two appearances in the middle of that season and another 12 the following season, when Liverpool tried unsuccessfully to bounce straight back into the top division.

He had to wait for a change of manager to get a decent run in the team and his best season for the club, under the leadership of Phil Taylor, came in the 1957-58 season when he appeared in the first 26 league fixtures before losing his place. He turned out for the first-team just once more that season, a defeat at Bristol Rovers on 8th March 1958, and made a further 10 Second Division appearances in 1957-58 before being transferred to Crewe Alexandra. He made 149 Football League appearances for Crewe before signing for Gillingham in 1962. He played 29 games for Gillingham before joining Folkestone in 1964 where he spent three years. He then settled in at Margate where he played 99 games as right-back and on occasion in midfield, while working as a painter and decorator.
