  PROFILE

Tall and stocky, goalkeeper Kenneth Campbell joined Liverpool from Cambuslang in May 1911. At first he was understudy to the great Sam Hardy but when the Englishman moved to Aston Villa, Campbell looked set for a long career at Anfield. Indeed, he missed only one League game in 1912-13, and a mere four games the following season. His position as first-choice goalkeeper seemed assured, but his understudy was none other than Elisha Scott and the Irishman's brilliance was soon to oust Campbell. Yet Campbell was international class and fully deserved his eight Scotland caps (three while at Anfield). He played in the 1914 FA Cup Final against Burnley and was one of the Liverpool heroes that day, certainly not to be blamed for the only goal of the match which gave Burnley victory. He missed more than half the 1914-15 season, but returned after the war for one more campaign before being finally ousted by Scott. Campbell moved to Partick Thistle (where he won a Scottish Cup winners' medal in 1921), and also played for Stoke, Leicester and New Brighton to take his career tally to nearly 400 matches. On retirement, he settled in the Wirral and ran a sports-goods shop. He had an engaging line in conversation for any customer who loved soccer. He died in April 1977.
