PROFILE
Rafael Benitez secured his third signing in the January transfer window 2005 with
the capture of highly rated goalkeeper Scott Carson from Leeds United, and he ended up
with a Champions League winners medal.
Carson was on the bench against AC Milan in Istanbul and he made an appearance in
the Champions League during the 2-1 win over Juventus when he made a crucial save to keep
out Del Piero at the Kop end.
Carson had only made three senior appearances for the Leeds first team previously
before he turned down the financial lure of Chelsea to come to Liverpool.
He became Benitez's first English signing since taking over as Reds boss.
Scott was spotted playing for home-town amateur side Cleator Moor Celtic Football
Club, and then spent less than a year in the Leeds United Academy and half a season with
the reserves before he made his senior debut.
He has a string of England youth international honours to his name and is an
England Under-21 international, the first of which was won against Holland in February
2004.
The 19-year-old stands at six foot three and is a good shot stopper. Carson made a
dramatic start to his career at Leeds, coming on as a substitute against Middlesbrough in
January 2004 after Paul Robinson had been sent off, and then making his full debut two
weeks later against Manchester United at Old Trafford last season. He played well too as
the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
