PROFILE
Record signing Djibril Cisse has made an amazing recover from a broken leg and
returned to action in April 2005.
Liverpool smashed their transfer record when they paid more than 14 million for
French ace Djibril Cisse in July 2004.
Cisse had been tracked by the Reds for more than two years and finally signed in at
Anfield after deciding to bring his career with Auxerre to an end.
Regarded as one of the top strikers in Europe, the speedy striker had awful luck on
signing for the Reds when he broke his leg during the match at Blackburn on October 30th
2004.
Cisse was born in Arles, France on August 12, 1981, and signed for Auxerre from
local side Nimes at the age of 15.
His first taste of success arrived in May 1999 when he helped Auxerre's youth team
win the Coupe Gambardella. It was to be the start of a meteoric rise to the top for the
powerful front man.
He netted six goals for the French under-18 team the following year as he fired his
country to glory and then in the 2001-02 season he was the top scorer in the French
league, grabbing 22 goals as Auxerre finished third and qualified for the Champions
League.
He made his full international debut against Belgium in May 2002 and was then named
ahead of Nicolas Anelka in the French squad for the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
Although France disappointed in that competition it wasn't long before Cisse was
adding to his medal collection as he helped Auxerre win the French Cup in May 2003 and was
then part of the French squad which won the Confederations Cup a month later.
His career to date hasn't all been plain sailing, however. In February 2004 he was
sent-off playing for France Under-21s as they failed to qualify for the Under-21
tournament. He was given a five game international ban which ruled him out of the senior
squad for Euro 2004.
Cisse played his final game for Auxerre in May 2004, finishing his career in France
with 70 goals in 128 league games for Auxerre.
