Joe Corrigan may have never played for Liverpool, but he admits the club is close
to his heart now as he holds down one of the most important roles on the backroom team.
A goalkeeper with Manchester City, Brighton and England Joe was always assured of a
warm welcome from the Kop during his playing days and when he was offered the opportunity
to join the Anfield staff in 1994 he didn t hesitate in accepting.
He was initially brought in solely as a goalkeeping coach but he was handed the
added responsibility of taking charge of the Reserve side.
"It was a great thrill for me to be offered the post of goalkeeping coach but
then when I was asked to take over as Reserve team manager as well it meant a great
deal," he said.
In his role as goalkeeping coach, Joe has worked with a number of the club's
goalkeepers over recent years, and has even travelled on scouting missions to eye up
possible number ones for the future. By his own admission he likes to vary the training
sessions he conducts with the goalkeepers and the many hours he spends every day of the
week on the training field gives a key insight into the hard work he puts his goalkeepers
through.
As Reserve team coach he also excelled. In his first season in charge, 1998/99, he
guided them to second place in the Pontins League before successfully leading them to the
inaugural FA Premier Reserve League (North) title in the 1999-2000 season, the clubs first
such honour for a decade.
Just before the 2002-2003 season Corrigan was relieved of reserve team duties to
concentrate solely on goalkeeping coach.
Gerard Houllier can have no doubts that, in Joe Corrigan, the future of both
Liverpool's goalkeeping fraternity is in safe hands. |
