PROFILE
Generally an outside-right, although he won his England caps on the left flank. Jack Cox
was a real flyer for his hometown club, Blackpool, before joining Liverpool in 1897. He
was said to have some of the attributes of the legendary Billy Meredith, and he netted
some useful goals to add to the scoring opportunities he made for others. He missed only
two games in the Championship-winning season of 1900-01, scoring ten goals and repeated
that figure in the successful promotion season of 1904-05. When Liverpool went on to claim
the League title again the following season, Cox scored eight goals in 28 matches. He
served Liverpool for 12 seasons, playing in a total of 360 League and Cup games and
scoring 80 goals, an average of a goal every four and a half matches. That was an
extremely respectable figure for a winger. Cox was capped three times by England as well
as playing three times for the Football League. He returned to Blackpool as player-manager
in 1909 and retired two years later.
Stats Note for Jack Cox
John Thomas "Jack" Cox was said to have been born in Blackpool on
21.11.1876 in Who's Who of Liverpool 1892-1989 by Doug Lamming, but we now have info from
his birth certificate which is in no doubt the ultimate source. Cox indeed lived in
Blackpool, but he moved there 3/4 years old after being born on 266 Vauxhall Road in
Liverpool. Cox died on 11th November 1955 in Walton on Thames, Surrey.
