PROFILE
Big money signing Salif Diao finished the 2004/05 season on loan at Birmingham City
where he played just two games in an injury hit spell.
During the summer of 2005 Diao will find out what the future holds for him as a
Liverpool player.
He has proved to be a major disappointment at Anfield since Gerard Houllier signed
the Senegal international from French club Sedan for over 5 million pounds in the summer
of 2002.
Diao featured alongside Diouf in the World Cup for Senegal and had mixed fortunes.
He scored one of the best goals in the finals against Denmark when he finished off a
brilliant team move. Then, in the same match Diao was then sent-off for a rash tackle
forcing him to miss the second round win over Sweden.
The 25-year-old midfielder moved to France at the age of 17 from second division
Epinal. He then spent three seasons with Monaco and helped them to win the championship in
2000.
Like many of Senegal's players - the entire national squad is based in Europe -
Diao resisted the chance to play for his home country for many seasons. It wasn't until
Senegal brought in French coach Bruno Metsu that Diao reconsidered his decision.
He then notched one of the most important goals in Senegal history in February
2002, when his extra-time strike saw his side through to the final of the African Nations
Cup, where they lost to Cameroon. Total LFC club games/goals for Under 18s, Reserves
