  PROFILE

Locally-born Done, who joined Liverpool in 1938 after being spotted playing for Bootle Boys Brigade, had the bizarre experience of scoring on his first two League appearances more than seven years apart!

Centre or inside forward Done made his Liverpool debut on September 2 1939 and hit the only goal of a 1-0 home win over Chelsea. But the Second World War began the next day and the abandonment of the League programme meant that his next outing in the old First Division did not come until October 12 1946 when he was on target in the 1-1 home draw with Charlton.

Although not a first team regular he went on to collect a championship medal that season and confirmed his wartime scoring form built around a fierce left foot shot. Done contributed 10 goals - including two hat tricks - in 17 games in the title year as third top scorer behind Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins.

Done, who also played cricket for Bootle, totalled 37 goals in 109 senior Liverpool outings, including a prolific burst of eight goals in seven successive games in November and December 1948. He joined Tranmere in 1952 and Port Vale two years later - ironically scoring all four goals in a 4-3 win over Liverpool in 1955 - before joining Winsford United and managing Skelmersdale United. A tireless worker for cancer charity he died on the same day as Bobby Moore, in February 1993.

  Stats Note for Cyril Done

The games in the 1939-40 season are not considered valid by "Association of football statisticians", but LFChistory chooses to count them towards player totals (as many LFC books) as it's open to interpretation whether they should be counted or not. The games are however not included in their career milestones as they are not publically acknowledged as such.
