PROFILE
Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan became Gerard Houllier's first
summer signing ahead of the 2003-2004 season, when after much speculation he arrived from
Fulham.
The 2003/04 season was a frustrating one in many ways for Finnan as he arrived at
the club recovering from a summer operation, then missed a large portion of the season
through injury.
Finnan is an attacking right back whose proudest moment to date was being part of
the Republic of Ireland squad for the 2002 World Cup, and although he wasn't first choice
at the start he played his way into Mick McCarthy's starting line-up.
Finnan started his career at non-league Welling before moving into league football
with Birmingham under Barry Fry and Notts County. It was actually Liverpool legend Kevin
Keegan who brought Steve Finnan to Fulham from Notts County for just 600,000 pounds in
November 1998.
Finnan was a big success at Fulham and a popular figure with the fans and he is
sure to have a good rapport with the Kop in his Anfield career.
Transferred from Notts County to
Fulham in November 1998 for 600,000 pounds.
