  PROFILE

Joe was a forward who had several seasons at Anfield during the first decade of the 20th Century. He was signed from Sunderland during the 1903-04 season and quickly won a place in the side, playing in the last 10 First Division fixtures but being unable to stop the club's slide into the Second Division. He only figured 9 times in 1904-05, which was not enough to win a Second Division championship medal. He was a key member of the team the following year when the First Division title was won for the second time in the club's history. Joe was easily Liverpool's top-scorer that year with 24 goals from his 37 appearances.

Injury kept him out a lot the following year but he returned to form towards the end of the decade, scoring 33 times from 69 games in the 1907-08 & 1908-09 seasons. Hewitt made 4 more appearances in 1909-10 before being transferred to Bolton Wanderers.

He was a member of Liverpool's staff for several years after his retirement in 1911.
