PROFILE
Striker David Hodgson was a J450,000 capture from Middlesbrough in the summer of 1982,
following the likes of Graeme Souness and Craig Johnston in moving to Anfield from
Middlesbrough.
He made his Reds debut as a substitute for Kenny Dalglish in the 1-0 FA Charity
Shield victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, and went on to make 20 league starts in
his only full season at Liverpool and scored his first goal in his third match in a 2-0
win against Arsenal at Highbury.
An England under-21 international, Hodgson, complete with trademark moustache, was
blessed with pace but was a frustrating player at times.
He won a championship medal in 1983 and played alongside Kenny Dalglish and Ian
Rush in a three man attack. The following season saw the arrival of Michael Robinson to
Anfield and Hodgson had to settle for the role of substitute.
Frustrated by a lack of first team openings under new boss Joe Fagan, Hodgson moved
on to Sunderland in 1984 for J125,000. He then had spells at Norwich City, Sheffield
Wednesday, Swansea City and abroad with Metz and Jerez, plus a spell with Japanese side
Mazda.
Hodgson ventured into management in the 1990's having two spells with Darlington,
and regularly plays for the Liverpool old boys team in the Masters series. Total LFC club
