PROFILE
Kenny Dalglish signed stylish Swedish international centre half Glenn Hysen from
under the noses of Manchester United in 1989.
The centre half, who arrived from Fiorentina for just J625,000, had established
quite a reputation, especially with his recent performance for Sweden against England and
United desperately wanted to sign him. However, Dalglish quickly pounced to make him a
Liverpool player.
Hysen made his Reds debut in the 1989 Charity Shield win over Arsenal at Wembley
and gave an outstanding performance as the Reds fans quickly warmed to him. Strong in the
air and strong in the tackle he was the perfect foil for Alan Hansen.
The silver-haired Hysen scored his first Liverpool goal at Anfield in the 9-0
destruction of Crystal Palace and went on to produce outstanding performances as Liverpool
won the League Championship.
The following season was something of a struggle for Hysen. With Hansen ruled out
for the whole season through injury, Hysen, skipper in Jockey's absence, found the burden
tough and he was being caught out for pace. One example of that came in the extraordinary
4-4 draw with Everton.
Shortly after Graeme Souness took over the Anfield helm Hysen was allowed to leave
the club, but not before he made a return to the team for a brief renaissance in the
1991-92 season. On leaving Liverpool he returned to Sweden.
