PROFILE
Alan Harper was a regular member of Roy Evans' all-conquering Liverpool
reserve side in the early eighties but even his ability to play in a variety of positions
failed to win him a solitary senior appearance. In June 1983 he was allowed to join Howard
Kendall's emerging Everton in a J100,000 cross-city transfer deal and it was with the Blue
half of Merseyside that he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career. Regarded as
something of a lucky charm by Evertonians he had an important role to play in their
success of the mid-eighties and revelled in his Supersub status. Although never a regular
starter, his versatility proved priceless. On leaving Everton in 1998 he experienced
spells with Luton, Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City before returning for a second
spell with the Toffeemen in 1991. Also turned out for Burnley and Cardiff before hanging
up his boots.
