  PROFILE

Ipswich T - Liverpool 1-1 (D1 13.12.1980, photo: George Herringshaw)  Liverpool born centre half Colin Irwin gave one of his best display's for Liverpool in Germany when he played in the 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the European Cup semi-final.

Deputising for the injured Phil Thompson, Irwin gave an outstanding performance alongside Alan Hansen as the Reds defence held firm to give Liverpool a famous victory.

Irwin also played in the 1981 League Cup Final against West Ham United at Wembley but didn't pick up a medal as the game ended in a draw, and he was not included for the replay.

He came through the ranks at Anfield and made his league debut in a 3-1 home victory over West Bromwich Albion in August 1979. He scored his first goal in his second game but it ended in disappointment as the Reds lost 3-2 to Southampton at the Dell.

Establishing himself as a first team regular though was never going to be easy and, unfortunately, he was never more than a fringe player at Anfield, although he could always be relied on to do a good job when called upon.

In 1981 left to join Liverpool old boy John Toshack's Swansea City and captained the Swans before having to retire from football through injury at the age of 27.

Colin had to wait patiently for his debut at Liverpool - he had been a professinal for nearly five years at Anfield until his first appearance in August 1979. He was unable to establish himself as a regular in the starting line-up.
