PROFILE
Brad Jones was brought to Liverpool in the summer of 2010 to provide back-up for
Pepe Reina.
The Australia international spent the majority of his fledgling career as the
understudy to former Middlesbrough stopper Mark Schwarzer before battling it out with Ross
Turnbull to become first-choice at the Riverside at the start of the 2008-09 season.
Injury would hinder his time as the Boro' No.1 as he missed chunks of a forgettable
relegation campaign as well as the start of the club's bid to bounce back from the
Championship.
However, he did recover in time to make what would prove to be his last 24
appearances and earn a place in Australia's World Cup squad. He would later relinquish his
spot due to personal circumstances.
Having arrived in the North-East from hometown club Bayswater City SC back in July
1998, Jones soon established himself as a goalkeeping star of the future.
The Aussie teenager signed his first professional contract a year later and went on
to be one of the stand-out performers in Middlesbrough's run to the 2000 FA Youth Cup
semi-final.
However, with Schwarzer firmly positioned as Boro's No.1, Jones found his chances
restricted. Loan spells with Shelbourne, Stockport, Rotherham and Blackpool followed
before he became a regular fixture on the bench in the 2003-04 season due to the absence
of back-up 'keeper Carlo Nash through injury.
It was during this campaign that he made his full debut for Boro' in a 2-0 FA Cup
win over Notts County. He would later pick up a League Cup winners' medal too, after being
named as an unused substitute in the 2-1 victory over Bolton in the final.
The 2005-06 season would once again provide him with some moments in the limelight,
most notably in Middlesbrough's run to the UEFA Cup final, as he deputised for Schwarzer
in the memorable semi-final triumph over Steaua Bucharest.
This led to another loan move and a 15-game spell with Sheffield Wednesday before
he earned his first start for Australia in a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay on June 2, 2007.
Mark Schwarzer's move to Fulham in the summer of 2008 opened the door for more
first-team opportunities and, despite suffering some setbacks, he impressed enough to earn
a move to Liverpool in August 2010.
His Reds debut came at Anfield a month later on September 22 - though it was one to
forget as the club slipped to an embarrassing penalties defeat to bottom division
Northampton Town in the League Cup.
With opportunities limited, Jones joined Derby County on loan for the final few
months of 2010-11.
