PROFILE
A former pupil of De Le Salle in Croxteth, Jewell was spotted by Liverpool
scouts as a schoolboy and quickly snapped up. A red-hot Liverpudlian he rose through the
ranks and impressed with his goalscoring form for the reserves. During the memorable
treble winning season of 1983/84 he seemed on the verge of a first team breakthrough and
was included in the travelling party for away games on three occasions but that was as
good as it got. With the Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush partnership showing no signs of
splitting up, Jewell eventually moved to Wigan for a J15,000 fee in December 1984. In the
lower leagues he became renowned as a frequent scorer and after fours years the club he
now manages moved on to Bradford, who he also later managed. The popular Scouser ended his
playing career with a brief loan spell at Grimsby before embarking a managerial odyssey
that has saw him develop into one of the most high-profile figures in the game right now.

As Paul Jewell prepares to bring his high-flying Wigan side to Anfield on Saturday,
his former youth coach at Liverpool has paid him a glowing tribute.
Boot-room legend John Bennison has recalled the days when a teenage Jewell took his
first tentative steps in the professional game as an Anfield apprentice.
Bennison remember the Latics boss as a very good forward player whose path to the
Reds first team was unfortunately blocked by legendary strike duo Kenny Dalglish and Ian
Rush.
He has followed his career with close interest ever since and is delighted, but
surprised, to see him doing so well in the game right now.
Says Bennison: "It's amazing to hear all the praise that he's been getting
this season because when I think back to all the young players I coached at Liverpool he'd
have been the one who I'd have said at the time was the most unlikely to become a manager.
"He was a smashing bloke, quiet and unassuming. He just used to get on with
his game, didn't bother anyone and was very unobtrusive.
"I've always had a lot of time for him and I remember when he brought his
Bradford side to Anfield a few years back, we had a good chat and reminisced about the old
days. He told me that some of the things he learnt from me back then he uses in his
training sessions now, so that was nice and I'm really pleased to see him doing so well.
"It was a scout called Malcolm Bates who first alerted us to Paul Jewell. He
informed us of this lad he'd spotted playing for De La Salle school and we sent a scout
down to watch him with the instructions that if he was half decent arrange for him to
start training at Melwood on a Tuesday and Thursday.
"So Paul started training with us but about a month had passed and he was yet
to score a goal. I went out to watch the game he was playing in one particular night and I
was thinking if he didn't score in this then we'd have to release him. Anyway we were
playing against a local school and won 3-0. He scored all three and really looked the
part, so that got him off the hook so to speak.
"I'd have liked to see him break into the first team but the competition for
places in the side at the time, especially up front, was such that it was always going to
be an uphill struggle displacing the likes of Dalglish and Rush.
"But that doesn't mean to say Paul was not a good player. When I look back at
the records I kept the name Jewell jumps out at me. 'Jewell scored three, Jewell scored
four and so on'. He scored some goals for us at youth and reserve level.
"You could say he was at the right club at the wrong time but he learnt an
awful lot from his Anfield experience and I'm sure that is paying dividends for him
now."
