PROFILE
Assured of
an enduring niche in football history as the only British player to score winning goals in
two European Cup Finals. His first was the only one of Liverpool's 1981 meeting with Real
Madrid in Paris.
Three years later it was the England left back's spot kick in the penalty shoot-out
against Roma in their opponents' own Olympic Stadium, that brought the prestigious trophy
to Anfield for a fourth time.
Nicknamed 'Barney Rubble' by the Kop after the character in television's
"Flintstones", he was defender of power and pace with a menacing left foot,
either delivering inviting crosses or unleashing one of his fierce trademark shots.
Kennedy, like Terry McDermott, was a member of the Newcastle side that lost 3-0 to
Liverpool in the 1974 FA Cup Final.
Yet he too revealed sufficient talent to impress the Anfield staff and Bob Paisley
- who as a boy in County Durham used to buy fish and chips from Kennedy's mother, paid
J300,000 to sign him in 1978 as replacement for Joey Jones. He joined his hometown club
Sunderland in 1985, moved on to a number of other clubs and is now an after-dinner speaker
as well as running coaching schools.
Stats Note for Alan Kennedy:
3 European goals <-> 4 Euro goals
His penalty against AS Roma on the 30.05.1984 is not included in his goal total as
seems to be the case with Complete record and Player by player. No goals in penalty
shoot-outs are counted towards player’s totals.
251 League games <-> 249 League games
He is listed as having played 40 league games in 1982/83 in Complete Record, but in
the season review in the same book he is said to have played every single game of that
season, 42 in total. His total is listed as 249 league games, but should be 251 games.
Champions of Champions by Brian Pead (published 1990) substantiates he played 42 games
that season. Furthermore The Official Year book lists him with 251 league games. Clearly
the stats list in Complete record lead to further miscalculations in other books. Player
by player (published 1990) and Who’s Who of Liverpool 1892-1989 by Doug Lamming
(published 1989) say 249 league games. Total LFC club games/goals for Reserves

ENGLAND
1984 v Northern Ireland, Wales (2).
Claim to fame: Paris '81 and Rome '84 – need we say anymore?
Did you know? Prior to the 1984 European Cup Final the Liverpool
squad practiced penalties at Melwood and Kennedy was deemed one of the worst takers!
Where is he now? Living locally and working as a media
pundit/after-dinner speaker
Les Lawson on Alan Kennedy: "Barney Rubble, full of energy,
full of life and the only man ever to score two winning goals in a European Cup final. He
was a great, great player." |
