  PROFILE

Dutch international Jan Kromkamp became Rafael Benitez's first major signing of 2006 when he arrived at Anfield from Villarreal in a swap deal that involved Josemi moving in the opposite direction.

A Dutch international, Kromkamp was originally is equally adept as a right full-back or wing-back and shot to prominence during AZ67 Alkmaar's exciting run to the 2004/05 UEFA Cup semi-final.

Born in Makkinga, Holland, he started his professional career as a midfielder with Go Ahead Eagles in 1998, for whom he scored five goals in 61 appearances before joining AZ.

In August 2004 he made his international debut when coming on as a substitute in a friendly away to Sweden and has since established himself as a regular member of the full Holland squad.

His spell in La Liga with Villarreal was brief. After joining them during the summer of 2005 he found it hard to settle and made just a handful of appearances before Liverpool swooped.
