  PROFILE

French central defender Carl Medjani will spend the entire 2005/06 season on a year's loan back in France with FC Metz.

Medjani spent the entire 2004/05 season on a year's loan at French second division team L'Orient.

Medjani became Gerard Houllier's fifth summer signing ahead of the 2003/04 season when he arrived at Anfield from Saint Etienne in August 2003.

Medjani was a regular member of the reserve team in the 2003/04 and captained the team when John Welsh was out injured and is certainly competitive and strong in the tackle.

Medjani is one for the future but certainly has good pedigree and Houllier beat off competition from Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United to sign Medjani.

Indeed Sir Alex Ferguson even invited him over to view the club's training complex in February 2003, but the player chose Liverpool.

He has yet to make a first team appearance in a competitive match although he was an unused subsitute for the first team during the Champions League tie in FBK Kaunas. He has played in three first team friendlies against Wrexham in 2004 and in 2005 against Bayer Leverkusen and the full 90 minutes against Olympiacos.
