PROFILE
Nieuwenhuys, or 'Nivvy' as he was nicknamed by those who couldn't cope with his
strange-sounding South African surname, was a skilful winger who could play on either
flank. He played for Liverpool mostly in the 1930's, although he did also have a brief
second spell with the club after the Second World War. His name was almost a permanent one
on the teamsheet for six seasons and was also a regular on the scoresheet too; 79 goals in
league and cup by the time his career ended in 1947 was a remarkable total for someone in
his position.
Berry's speed and trickery confused many an opponent and he could also pack a fierce shot,
something which contributed greatly to the number of goals he scored. Finally, over 13
years after he had originally been selected for the first-team, he was able to taste some
well-deserved success. Berry may not have been a regular in the team which won the League
championship in 1947 but he did make enough appearances to qualify for a medal. It was a
fine and fitting end to the career of one of Liverpool's 'great entertainers'. |
