PROFILE
Christian Poulsen joined Liverpool on a three-year deal in August 2010.
The midfield enforcer enters into his 14th season of a diverse and colourful career
that has taken in the Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A prior to arriving in the Barclays
Premier League.
His footballing journey started at hometown club Asnaes, but a switch to Holbaek
and a professional debut soon followed at the tender age of 17 - and his rapid rise
continued with a call-up to the Danish U19 squad in September 1998.
Two years and 82 appearances later, Poulsen was handed a trial at FC Copenhagen by
a certain Roy Hodgson, who was suitably impressed enough to move quickly and snap-up the
tough-tackling star.
The pair enjoyed a highly-successful 2000-01 campaign, in which Copenhagen finished
as league champions and Poulsen was named as Denmark's Young Player of the Year.
Hodgson's tenure at the Parken Stadium had ended in the summer of 2001, but Poulsen
would have one more term with Byens Hold, helping them to a second-place finish and
clinching the club's Player of the Year accolade.
International recognition came as no surprise to anyone who had witnessed his
dominant midfield performances and a first cap duly arrived in November 2001 against
Holland.
Poulsen was included in Denmark's squad for the 2002 World Cup and figured in all
three group games from the bench.
However, he managed to accumulate two bookings and subsequently missed the Danes'
exit at the hands of England in the knockout phase.
Nonetheless, Schalke swooped to sign Poulsen following the tournament for 7m Euros
- a then record fee for a Danish league player.
His star continued to rise in the Bundesliga and though initially deployed at
right-back, he was an established defensive midfielder for both club and country by the
time of Euro 2004, where Denmark reached the last eight in Portugal before crashing out to
the Czech Republic.
Poulsen's form in 2004-05, in which Schalke lifted the German League Cup and
finished second in the Bundesliga, saw him named as Denmark's Player of the Year - and he
became the first player in history to retain the accolade a year later.
However, Denmark's failure to qualify for the 2006 World Cup prompted him to seek
pastures new.
UEFA Cup holders Seville beat off stiff competition to land the midfielder, and his
first act for his new club was to help them overturn reigning European Champions Barcelona
in the Super Cup final in Monaco.
Poulsen was an integral part of Sevillistas' success in retaining the UEFA Cup in
2006-07 as well as securing the Copa del Rey.
However, Seville endured a disappointing 2007-08 season and Juventus came calling
for the services of the Danish ace.
His maiden term in Turin yielded a second-place finish, though Italy's Old Lady
slipped to seventh in his second Italian campaign.
A mainstay of the Denmark side, Poulsen played 882 out of a possible 900 minutes,
scoring two goals, in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals.
Out in South Africa, the lynchpin figured in all three of their matches but was
unable to prevent his country was dropping out of the competition at the group stage.
His disappointment was soon dispersed, however, by a move to Anfield.
