  PROFILE

Sheffield-born Bernard's Liverpool career lasted over a decade but the Second World War took away many years from that as far as competitive football was concerned. He was a left full-back who made his debut for the club as a 19 year old at Chelsea on the opening day of the 1937-38 season. Bernard made 14 First Division appearances during his debut season and also played in the 4th round FA cup replay victory over Sheffield United in January 1938. He was only selected for 10 league matches the following year but by the time the 1939-40 season opened he had become Liverpool's first-choice left-back. Unfortunately, that season was suspended after only 3 games due to the outbreak of war.

Bernard was 27 when the war ended and still considered as the club's No. 3 in August 1946. Although he lost his place after making 18 consecutive appearances from the start of the season, that was enough to qualify for a championship medal even though he was rarely called on during the second half of the season. Ray Lambert took over his position in Liverpool's defence and Bernard moved on to Sunderland in March 1948 before finishing his playing career with their North-East neighbours Hartlepools United.

  Stats Note for Bernard Ramsden:

The games in the 1939-40 season are not considered valid by "Association of football statisticians", but LFChistory chooses to count them towards player totals (as many LFC books) as it's open to interpretation whether they should be counted or not. The games are however not included in their career milestones as they are not publically acknowledged as such.
