  PROFILE

John Arne Riise became Liverpool's first signing during the 2001 summer break when he completed a 4 million move from Monaco.

In his debut season Riise quickly settled and his first goal for the Reds couldn't have been more dramatic, as he scored the first in a 3-2 win over Bayern Munich to help Liverpool win the Super Cup at his old ground in Monaco!

Another highlight was his stunning free-kick in the 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield in November which left the Kop asking 'How did he score that goal!'

Riise also won an award back home in his native Norway when he was named 'Athlete of the Year 2001'.

Riise scored eight goals in his first season at Anfield, including two terrific strikes on the last day of the season 5-0 win over Ipswich at Anfield.

He had a largely disappointing 2003/04 season and didn't score a goal from 35 games played.

Riise had been tipped to join Fulham and link up again with former manager Jean Tigana, but Gerard Houllier persuaded the Norwegian under-21 international to instead make the move to Anfield.

A talented left sided player, Riise can operate in both defence and midfield.

A championship winner in France with Monaco, Riise is hoping to enjoy a successful career at Anfield and establish himself in both his club and country's long term plans.

Riise was rewarded with a new contract extension in the summer of 2002 which ties him to Anfield until 2007.
