  PROFILE

Mark Smyth 2003-4  England Under-20 international Mark Smyth is a real livewire of a player who has been given a second chance at Liverpool under Rafael Benitez.

When Gerard Houllier was in charge of Liverpool Smyth was to be released but all that changed with the arrival of Benitez.

He fulfilled a childhood ambition when he made his Liverpool debut in the Carling Cup quarter-final win at Tottenham in December 2004.

A pacy frontman Smyth's best position many feel is on the left side of midfield when he can run at defenders and utilise his burning pace.

For the 2004/05 season Smyth was called into the England Under-20 squad for whom Anfield team-mate David Raven captains.

A product of the Academy and a lifelong red, he idolised Ian Rush when he was growing up and is hoping to follow in his hero's footsteps by making it all the way to the Reds' first team.
