PROFILE
Cameroon star Rigobert Song joined Premiership rivals West Ham United on Tuesday, November
28th, 2000, in a J2.5 million swap deal, which saw Liverpool sign Finnish under-21 striker
Daniel Sjood.
Rigobert Song arrived at Anfield in January 1999 from Italian Serie A side
Salernitana. Having been frozen out by the Italians, Song impressed during a trial spell
at Anfield and made his first team debut against Coventry City at Highfield Road.
Song made 38 appearances for the Reds but didn't manage a goal, and his last
appearance for Liverpool was a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Anfield on September 23rd. He
played just four games in the 2000-2001 season.
The first Cameroon star to play for the Reds, Rigobert Song became an instant hit
with the Liverpool supporters who appreciated his all action style and 110 per cent
effort. Before he arrived at Anfield Song already had the distinction of playing in two
World Cup Finals for his country.
His natural position is centre half but Song operated at right back during his time
with the Reds and was a real cult figure amongst the Anfield faithful who used to
affectionately sing "We've only got one Song"!
He had a mixed 1999-2000 campaign, missing three months of the season due to
international commitments with Cameroon, captaining them to victory in the African Nations
Cup and scoring the decisive penalty decider.
He certainly produced some performances of true grit for the Reds in the 1999-2000
season. None better than when he marked Australian winger Harry Kewell out of the game
during the Reds 2-1 victory at Elland Road. A player who always gave his best and played
with a smile on his face.
