  PROFILE

Graeme Souness had long admired the talents of Paul Stewart before paying Tottenham J2.5 million for his services during the summer of 1992.

In his White Hart Lane days, Stewart had gone from a striker to a central midfielder with an eye for goal, and won three England caps under Graham Taylor. He was in Terry Venables Tottenham side that won the FA Cup in 1991 against Nottingham Forest and he scored in a 2-1 win.

Shortly after arriving at Anfield Stewart had looked impressive during the pre-season tour and made his Reds debut in the 4-3 Charity Shield defeat by Leeds United at Wembley. He then marked his Anfield debut with a goal in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United and scored on his European debut for the Reds with two goals in a 6-1 win over Apollon Limassol.

However, Stewart suffered niggling injury problems in his debut season that restricted his progress. The following 1993-94 season saw Stewart out of favour for the opening seven games of that campaign but he was restored to the side by Souness as a replacement for Jan Molby, and was then dropped after the humiliating 3-0 defeat by Newcastle at St James' Park. He didn't play again that season.

Stewart himself would admit that he was a major disappointment at Anfield. He never really got to grips with the Reds style of play and it was no surprise when he was shipped out on extended loan spells to the likes of Crystal Palace, Wolves and Burnley before Peter Reid signed him for Sunderland in 1996. He later had spells with Stoke and Workington.
