PROFILE
Midfielder Trevor Storton was signed by Bill Shankly from Tranmere Rovers at the
start of the 1972-73 season.
Shankly was still in the process of rebuilding his 'new' team but it was quickly
evident that Storton was not one of the players he expected to be a big part of that, even
though this was the year when the club finally ended its seven-year wait for a major
trophy.
He said of his time at Anfield: "I went to a club with so many internationals.
It limited my chances because they had great players like Tommy Smith and Emlyn Hughes who
you couldn't shift.
"But I'll never forget Shanks saying, 'If you can't pass the ball five yards
you can't pass it ten'. It's the simple things that make things work. He said football was
an easy game, and he was right."
Trevor was given his League debut at Leeds at the end of September 1972 but only
made another three League appearances that season and just one the following season,
before he returned to the lower divisions with Chester City in July 1974, when he made
over 500 appearances in all competitions.
He then moved into management with Unibond League outfit Bradford Park Avenue.
