PROFILE
A product of Liverpool's School of Excellence which he first attended as a nine
year old, David Thompson first tasted success in a Liverpool shirt when playing in the
club's FA Youth Cup winning side of 1996. He also earned international recognition for
England with appearances at schoolboy level as well as under-18 and under-21 levels.
Being on the fringe of the Liverpool first team for a number of seasons left
Thompson eager for the chance to prove himself on a regular basis. A lively, tricky
midfield player, Thompson's early performances at first team level were consistently good
and Gerard Houllier must have been delighted to have him tied to a long term contract at
Anfield.
Despite spending time on loan at Swindon Town during the 1998/99 season Liverpool
never had any intention of selling a player they had nurtured for many years. His
performances in the first division for Swindon had manager Steve McMahon drooling and he
would have been delighted to make the move a permanent one, but that was never a
possibility.
He made his first team debut for Liverpool against Arsenal in August 1996, but the
finest moment of his early career in a Red shirt came during the 1997/98 season when he
scored the winner against Crystal Palace at Anfield at the Kop end of the ground. During
the 1998/99 season he figured more than previous years and quickly grew to become a
favourite among Liverpool supporters - his only goal of that season came in the drubbing
of Southampton at Anfield when he was sent on as a substitute and scored the seventh of
the afternoon within fifteen seconds.
David's increasingly professional and dedicated attitude saw him turn in some
man-of-the-match performances at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, and he scored a
fine individual goal against Sheffield Wednesday at the start of December.
In the summer of 2000 he was transferred to Coventry City.
