PROFILE
French defender Djimi Traore has had a new lease of life under Rafael Benitez and since
returning from a pre-season injury has been a regular member of the team, and played in
the Champions League triumph over AC Milan.
Everton wanted to sign him at the start of the season but Benitez was having none
of it and saw Traore as an important player to have in his squad.
After establishing himself as a very capable centre half during the 2002/03 season
when he deputised for the injured Stephane Henchoz, Traore fell out of favour with Gerard
Houllier in 2003/04 and spent most of the time in the reserve team.
Traore has been used as a left back by Rafa Benitez and it is a role that he has
done well in. Under the previous regime Traore looked out of position at left back but
Benitez has given him confidence and the defender has responded well.
The French defender spent a season on loan at Lens for the 2001/2002 campaign when
he teamed up again with former Liverpool coach Patrice Bergues, then manager at Lens.
The highly rated Traore was one of the most sought after youngsters in Europe when
Gerard Houllier paid Laval #500,000 for him in February 1999. AC Milan, Paris St Germain
and Lazio were just a number of top clubs who courted Traore's signature and Gerard
Houllier was delighted to sign him up, describing him as 'a player with great potential
and a big player for the future'.
Traore immediately became a key figure in the Reds reserve side and was captain
when they clinched the FA Premier Reserve Championship North last season. He made his
senior bow at Hull City's Boothferry Park, and played in the return game at Anfield in the
Worthington Cup games against Hull in September 1999.
Traore currently has two years left under his present Liverpool contract.
Djimi is also an international for Mali. Total LFC club games/goals for Reserves
