  PROFILE

The cousin of former Tottenham and England winger Chris, Alan Waddle's major contribution to Liverpool was scoring the winning goal in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

In only his second outing for the club he stuck out a long leg to divert a right-wing cross into the Gwladys Street net for the only goal of the game in 1973 and it prompted the Kop to come up with a novel song for the derby hero entitled the Waddle Waddle song!

Signed from Halifax in the summer of 1973, his chances were always going to be limited due to the first choice partnership of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack.

The giant Geordie proved himself a prolific goalscorer in Roy Evans' all-conquering Liverpool reserve team but his first team appearances were fleeting. He did play in the second leg of the 1977 European Cup semi-final against FC Zurich but after then winning a medal as an unused substitute in the Rome final Waddle was transferred to Leicester City for 450,000 pounds in September 1977.

He later joined up with his former Anfield team-mate John Toshack at Swansea before seeing out his career with a succession of lower league clubs.
